No... part of me seems to remember someone saying theirs did, but it was fine after a short cool down.

You're in Scotland ?! How can you overheat a motor unless you're using it in a sauna ? You're not using it in a sauna are you ? They generally cool fairly well and should limit their own power when they get warm.

Would have thought if anyone would overheat one, it would be @Gary . He's a fine specimen of physicality and if anyone knows to abuse a motor he does.

Did you get an error code ? Or molten aluminium dripping from the BB ?

it was peter collard that told me the shimano motor is prone to overheating, thinking of deristricting and want to be sure.

Personally, I think you'll have more risk of overheating running such an old firmware. They'll have fixed a bunch of problems in the meantime and improved the software to avoid any issues like overheating.

If you really want to go the badass box route, the latest bad ass box 4 is compatible with Firmware 4.7

There's also stunlocker (was stepsunlocker) and others, for doing the same with software.

Would I need to update the firmware myself ? Heard the app can brick the motor and worried about

Mine overheated.
Big rocky climb, after several other climbs, up to Jacob's Ladder in the Peak District on one of the hottest days of the summer. WO10 error code and motor cut out. Rested it for ten minutes and was then ok for rest of ride.
Mates E-Trance didn't cut, all the other riders on non e bikes had to push for half a mile.

It would be nicer if the bike protected itself with a more graceful degradation in power. Spinning faster; which might not be possible on a rocky trail, might help because less motor current for the same power means significantly less I-squared R heating. After noticing that my Yamaha PW-SE motor was getting too hot to touch after my short commute against the wind I slowed down a few miles per hour and dropped down a gear. The same weather hot conditions but I could no longer feel the motor temperature rise.

Spin just ten percent faster to get the same power with twenty percent less motor heating; that’s the nature of I-squared R losses.
