Noob Charging question - BMS and amps...

Hey All,

Hopefully a simple one for some bright spark!

Appreciate BMS "does it's thing" when the battery is at 100% but I can't seem to find anywhere whether:-
a) You have to have the battery in the bike and attached to the controller or is it all done within the battery case?
b) When the battery is charged to 100%, do you leave it plugged into the charger for it to balance for an hour, or you unplug it from the charger and leave it for an hour to balance?

Secondly, clearly charging a battery at 2amps is better than charging it at 6amps in terms of longevity/battery life. My new ebike arrived yesterday and it has a Bosch Powertube 500w battery and the only charger it came with is the Bosch 6amp fast charger. I assume/hope the bosch battery has decent cells and can be charged at 6amps, but should I be considering buying a 2amp charger or is 6amps fine?

I never need to fast charge the battery so a 2amp slow charger would work, but the Bosch 2amp one is £100 and I cant find any cheap alternatives with the Bosch plug (anyone know of any?).

Thanks all!

Cheers,

Phil.

The BMS's tend to be in the battery unit itself - some people on here get really into the nitty gritty of battery cells, life and so on, but most of us just charge it up and go. Really the best advice is to do as per Bosch's recommendations, but the main thing that pretty much all the brands recommend is not to leave the battery fully depleted for any significant period of time, ideally dont charge it straight after a ride, and if you are not going to use it for a while charge it up to 60-70% before you store it. Although most of the chargers shut down when the battery is fully charged, a lot of us use timer plugs so that the battery isn't left plugged in unnecessarily.
