• Warning!!

Riding a tuned or deristricted EMTB is not a trivial offence and can have serious legal consequences. Also, many manufacturers can detect the use of a tuning device or deristricting method and may decline a repair under warranty if it was modified from the intended original specification. Deristricting EMTB's can also add increased loads for motors and batteries. Riding above the local law limit may reclassify the bike as a low-powered bike, requiring insurance, registration and a number plate.

Be aware of your local country laws. Many laws prohibit use of modified EMTB's. It is your responsibility to check local laws. Ignoring it, has potential implications to trail access, and risk of prosecution in the event of an accident.

Noisy TQ motor, maybe due to derestricted Speedi fitted

Hi folks, so we fitted a manual derestricting device called Speedi to our Trek fuel EXe 9.7 bikes a while ago. Lately the usual quiet TQ motors seem to be very noisy. Was wondering if anyone else have noticed this. I'm wondering if it's just an age thing for these motors as we have done a few thousand kms on the bikes. Or would it be an issue with the bikes motor working at the higher speeds being derestricted?
My thoughts are that because other countries have a higher restriction than Australia(25kph) the motors should be able to handle the extra speed??

If you are not using the higher gears at higher speeds, and instead riding super high cadences, then the motor is turning faster too. That might be an issue.

But if you are cadencing normally, the motor is not doing anything different to e.g. riding fast up an incline (think resistance).
