Hi all,

I'm looking to buy my first ebike, the trek rail being one option. Looking at the rail 5 or 7 or possibly the carbon version 9.5 or 9.7, not sure it is worth it for me spending the extra on the carbon though.

The main thing I'm not too sure about is the size to get as I'm in between. Sorry I know this has been asked before but just wanted your opinion.

I'm about 177cm so about 5'9.6/5'9.7 with an inseam of about 79cm / 31inch

Height wise this puts me in to large and inseam wise medium. The dealer I spoke with said I'd probably be a large. Hopefully will be able to test both at some point

What do you think would be best? And is the rail quite playful/poppy as like jumping off roots, ledges etc and doing manuals

Thanks!

I’m similar size as you. 5’9”, 31” inseam, longish reach, 165lbs. I settled for the medium Rail 9.7 (2020 model). I may have been in between sizes but the medium felt much better. I later changed the dropper to a 170mm, stem to a 45mm, and adjusted the bar width. I was able to tweak the bike geometry (with upgrades)to fit my style of riding.

with these longer a longer bikes... hmm... L's reach is 487-491mm (I'm happy with 475mm reach on my analog bike, and I'm 181cm). I'm not sure if sooo long ebike is a good idea, it can be a plus if you like straight roads or just bombing down in The Alps
M has re=452-456mm

The wheelbase on my Rail is 48”.(axle to axle) That’s about as long as I want because some tight switchbacks are tough to get thru and this tank is difficult to flip around.

Same height as you with a 769mm centre of BB to top of saddle measurement and it’s a Large for me, in the bikes Trek make an ML I get that, where they don’t I go Large.

Thanks for your replies all

The reach on the medium rail 7 is 445 in low or 450 in high and the large is 465 in low or 470 in high. I think that's right -

Yeah wheelbase on medium is 122 and large 124cm

I think the higher spec models with the bigger battery have a longer reach but I'd just be going for the 7 with the 625 battery

Cheers

Yeah, the higher spec more expensive bikes like the 9.8 and above are gen 3 with bigger battery and longer reach. I'm looking at gen 2 models, like the rail 7.

OK.

My wife is 170cm/5'7" with a 2022 Rail 5 Medium which is the right size for her.

I am 178cm/5'10" with a 2022 Rail 5 Large which is the right size for me.

I maintain my wife's Medium which is definitely too small for me.

Edit: which is definitely

Im 176cm and chose Medium 9.8 gen 2. I’ve ridden quite a bit on L Rails as well and I’m happy on both, but prefer to size down with Rails. I have a M/L Slash and that’s perfect. Wished they did a M/L for the Rail as well

Agree. Had a M/L Fuel EX which was the perfect size for me. If I went for a 750Wh Rail I'd probably also go Medium.

I'm leaning towards the large as I can always put a shorter stem on if need be and/or adjust bars.
Yeah the medium 750 models are in-between the M and L 625 models for reach and wheelbase etc then the L 750 model is a good bit bigger. However I don't think I really need the bigger battery capacity, so don't think it's worth spending almost 3k more for the 9.8xt in my case. An M/L would be perfect!

I know your looking at 7/9.5/9.7's with the older geo, but I was in a similar position with my 22 9.8XT. I'm 179cm with 32" inseam and was stuck between M and L. The jump in reach 456 to 491 is huge, I went smaller and got a medium.
