My advice to you: avoid aging!

After too many years of frequent and URGENT bathroom breaks that require planning for long drives and rides, I had prostate reduction surgery yesterday. The surgeon assured me that my bathroom needs would go back to normal when healing is complete. No more looking for a large tree to water. That's the good news.

The bad news is no riding for 6 weeks.

My grandpa said: Who does not want to get old must just die young.

Happy alive, turning older and older and wishing you all the best and hey, its winter time! 🥃

Reduction? I was thinking of going the other way, and responding to one of those emails that offers male enhancement surgery. Good luck with the healing, and hope it's not too awful waiting for the six weeks to pass.

P.S.
Thank you for not attaching your "Pic of the Day."

For those with prostate problems to look forward to (Yes you, if you are male. I'm talking to you!). Then it's not all as bad as @RebornRider posts (but maybe I just haven't got there yet!)

You can look forward to the following:
Your bladder not emptying fully: This creeps up on you. You go for a pee, finish and then leave the loo. About 30 mins later you are overcome with a sudden and desperate urge to pee. Anywhere will do! I can understand why middle-aged men get arrested for "public urination" (not me, yet!!!) At the time the motivation is not to piss in their pants.
Going in installments: After learning from the above, you take your time the first time. You finish then wait............... Sure enough, some more comes, frequently more than the first installment! Then (hot tip) you wait some more.............. Then a few dribbles and you're done! Just do a quick squirt and go at your peril!!
Being a source of humour for your mates:
When you go to the pub with your mates, sooner or later, and it's often SOONER, you need a pee. You cannot go in installments because other men using the facilities think you are prospecting for business, or at least give you funny looks. So, you return to your seat only to have to go again after another half pint. "He's off again!" is one of the kinder comments. They always ostentatiously check their watches on departure and return and comment appropriately. Ha Ha! Yes, really funny.
Becoming a drug addict: You visit the doctor and after a DRE (look it up!) you get medication to reduce "sudden urgency syndrome" and to reduce "night time urination frequency". You become one of those people that have to list the medication they are on when going to hospital, giving blood, visiting the dentist, or indeed anything medical.
You become the "old guy": I don't know about you, but I do not feel, look, or behave "old". I ride a mountain bike in dangerous places. I crash, I have accidents, I go OTB. But I DO NOT HAVE A FALL !!!! (FFS!)

It's not all bad: I do not ever wet myself, (well not yet anyway!). I know for certain that I do not have prostate cancer, thanks to all the investigations. Which is good to know because it's what killed my Dad when he was younger than I am now. Now that I am on my GP's radar, I get all sorts of other investigations, so I know for certain that I don't have anything else wrong with me either apart from being an arthritic old git (incurable). So that is all very good indeed. (y):)

I dunno, Steve, you say it's not as bad as I posted, but then you listed all the symptoms I had. 🙃

What the younger guys don't realize is that you have maybe 5 minutes, maybe less, from the initial "I think I have to go" until the pee is gonna come out. You cannot stop it. I remember getting stuck in crawling traffic about 20 years ago (before all the prostate excitement), and feeling like I was going to burst. It was a horrible drive, but I made it to work without leaking. If that happened in recent years, I would have to get to the side of the road and hide between opened passenger side doors. The pee will come out. You can't stop it!

I hadn't thought of the pic of the day. I bet y'all really want to see the surprisingly large tube threaded into willie. I've heard that pulling it out will not be much fun.

Nice design but surely it needs to be further up the seatpost ..or did you forget to show the tube attachment 😉😁
Edit ..speaking purely from a personal point of view ( I live in a fairly cold climate )
Yah, its a bit of a stretch… especially for me.

Wow, I’m 73 and had exactly the same symptoms as Steve. Had these issues for years. Finally went to see a Urologist and he put me on a drug called Tamsulosin (flowmax). Amazing after a couple of months I’m like young again with a full draining bladder. And I don’t have to pre-scope where the restrooms are at restaurants and the malls 😜.

Next he put me on a drug called Dutasteride to reduce a swollen prostrate (common in my age bracket) but takes 6 months as an alternative to surgery. The thing I worry about ANY invasive surgery is the potential of catching Sepsis.
I had a close friend and office mate a few years ago die of Sepsis after a surgery at 55 yrs old! I’ve heard of too many instances of Sepsis with surgeries.

Bonus… Dutasteride is a form of finesteride (Propecia) which I’ve been taking for 10 years 1 mg daily for keeping my hair (Amazing stuff) Dutasteride is 5 mg or 5 times stronger. I hope I don’t turn into a hairy Gorilla 😱.

I told the MD gimme the drug as I want to piss like a racehorse again 😜

I have nothing to do with healthcare so my comments are just from my own personal experience. But if you have “any” peeing issues see a Urologist to rule out prostrate cancer and kidney disease or other issue.

I can't believe no one does a "Bike Buddy" version of this !

Think of the possibilities !

The base version would be at least 10x the price because it says "bike".

The "Factory" version could have a Kashima equivalent coating as you definitely don't want stiction pulling that thing off as you pedal.

You could sell it in Small to XL, except Spesh who would have to do S2 to S5 and some of the boutique brands who might just do Medium and Large. Orbea would hopefully have an online configuration tool so you can pick the colour scheme you like the best - though you may have to wait 12 months for it to show up.

Rockshox would hopefully jump on board and do a version fitted with sensors and some automated pressure controls depending on where and how you're riding and would no doubt brand it "Rockshox Toilet Attendant".

A few years down the line, fox and rockshox will add manual pressure relief valves so you can let some air out so you can squeeze a little more pee in if you're really desperate. Then sue each other over who came up with the idea to pee first.

Just my take... (and I hope OP goes better then my case) I had Rezum prostate surgery 4 months ago,( 65 yo)after a month I tried to ride and still no go. Finally was able to ride and felt pretty good. Btw, still have to pee all the time but the flow is good.

Now, not so good. About 6 weeks ago after a particularly rough mtb ride, I had hematuria. (Blood in urine) Went away by the same night. Waited a week and did a road bike ride, 43 miles. Blood again.. and again, went away almost immediately. Waited couple weeks, changed seat btw, had a couple easy going trail rides, no problem. Now.. two weeks ago after a decent 23 mile trail ride I had severe blood. Issues since…. I’m hoping this gets fixed, but have seen urologist twice. Gonna try a couple of those hornless saddles (easyseat II and a spiderflex) I also just had a new Fox Float X Evol put on my Canyon Spectral, may not help but it sure looks good. 😜

Not a happy camper.. of course no riding for quite awhile.

so yeah, sucks getting old(er)

Hope this was not TMI. It’s just I’m going through this sh*t now and it helps me to talk.. it’s been kinda depressing.

p.s. all of the medications didn't really help and just made me VERY dizzy upon standing up quickly, a common side effect. Orthostatic hypotension. My blood pressure is naturally low and these just make it lower. No bueno.

@w2ge The door to TMI was opened ages ago! No criticism from me.

Once you find a saddle that helps with your current problem, and/or a treatment regime, and/or medication that works - then please post here. Posting your experience may help others (I hope not, but one of them may end up being me).

I can identify with the “uh, oh” moments. I was stuck in near standstill CA, USA freeway rush hour traffic and absolutely HAD TO pee, looked at my empty Starbucks cup and took necessary steps… hadn’t counted on how long and pathetically slow the process would be… nor had I counted upon the stares/glares from drivers looking down from their SUV’s and no way to hurry up my pee! Christ, I thought if Highway Patrol gets a report called in from another driver I’m gonna have some explaining to do…”well you see judge…”

Ageing is a Booger so Enjoy Yourself whilst you can
On the Prostrate theme I have been having PSA tests for a few years with a slight increase each year ...(Well I am 82)
Last time I cycled to the test clinic and what do you know results was WAY up so much so that Doc requested another test....I waited a week without riding and drove to the test...result Reading back to where it should be ... You know what the moral here is...
Just keep going as long as you can! Have Fun all

Not TMI - we oldsters have to support each other! My surgery was Monday and I'm still peeing Cabernet. It really shakes your confidence.
I’m here for you. Wondering what procedure you had? I had cath for 5 days, then tbh I had hematuria at times for about 5 weeks off and on. Stopped at about ten days then at three weeks came on strong. 😳

I feel like I wasn‘t really advised well enough as to what to expect.. ugghhh. Hang in there, I know mines gonna get better, its just trauma related to our sport. Oh well 😜

It has long been known that riding a bike can affect your perineal nerve, with subsequent effects on your wedding tackle. Avoid numbness guys!

On my last test, my GP advised me not to abstain from sex in the previous 24 hours. Apparently, it causes high numbers. Who knew? I sure didn't. That may explain a thing or two. :ROFLMAO:

By the way, it is nice to know that my attractive female 40 something GP thinks I'm still capable!

Edit: I have no idea how the word "not" got in there! I now have visions of ancient bikers all over the world firing up the old love muscle because it's on "doctor's orders!" :ROFLMAO:

A friend told me to angle my seat down at the front slightly to avoid any problems with my wedding tackle. I took his advice and will continue to do it.

According to my chart, I had a "Robotic assisted laparoscopic simple prostatectomy" Cath for 8 days (comes out Tuesday - should be a fun time!) Surgery was 5 days ago, and the worst remaining pain is the catheter, not the incisions or my guts. My doc gave in to my pressure and ordered 10 more Norco (opiod) tablets which I am cutting in half.

Forgot to mention I had Prostatitis last year. Not sure if that has a cycling implication or poor hygiene implication. I suspect it's both but don't have any evidence to prove it either way.

You had a more invasive (if I can call it that) procedure than I did as your procedure is for much more enlarged prostate than mine was.

Having the catheter removed is nothing, slides right out after they deflate the saline bubble.. no worries snd anything is better than that thing! 😳

If you want to DM me I can tell you some things I went through and I expect you will too. and what I did to alleviate some of these “issues”.

Not really something I think I should put up on here.
