My Wilier 803TRB ebike has been a revelation and I have had over 600 miles of enjoyable and trouble free riding. Until yesterday.
I had just began a shallow decent onto a local trail when there was an almighty metallic scraping sound with a momentary bike wobble and some frantic sphincter action. I skidded to a halt and saw my rear mech had detached and was partially wrapped around a chainstay and jammed tight against the wheel at the drive end. I initially assumed my mech hanger had failed but it was intact. Instead it was a Sunface 7075 mech extender which appeared to have snapped. There were no rocks worth noting on the way to or at the start of the trail and Im certain there was no impacts. I managed to extract the mauled derailleur and single speeded home. Thankfully the frame appears intact and I have a new mech and chain on its way.
Anyone had a similar failure? Im a pretty gentle rider and stick to pretty smooth XC type trails and avoid anything too gnarly. Is it possible the extender just failed spontaneously? Ive never had a similar incident in over 20 years riding. Thankfully!
