@Rob Rides EMTB : I just asked MagicShine directly about any compatibility issues with the Gen 3 Levo motor and got this response. It looks like you may have received a defective Brose power cable with +/- wires reversed:

"Thank you for your quick reply and your sharing~
If the motor output voltage for light is 6-12V, it can work with our light~

Our first lot brose testing cable with +/- reversed, mass have corrected , for now, distributors feedback works no probelm~"

I just got mine working! The Brose cable supplied by MagicShine was wired backwards, even though they said they fixed it. I checked this by plugging it into the bike and checking wether the center pole in the barrel plug was postive, which it was not. I decided to cut and splice the light side of the cable because I also wanted to shorten it, as they made it about 15 cm too long for mountain bikes. I just did a little test ride with it and I would say it produces significantly more light than the Lezyne Macro drive 1000 I use on my other bike.

Mounted Magicshine 902es yesterday (3000lumen).. Worked perfectly on both Gen 2 and Gen 3 (verified)

This is useful, but did you mean to say 902SE - this one here : Magicshine® MJ-902S Front Bike Light E-bike ready. It's odd that it should work and the ones that Rob and others tried (ME 2000 and 906S don't), particularly given that the ME2000 pushes out less lumens that the 902SE. Anyway, I've ordered a 902SE and will see how it goes!

Just saw this and your subsequent post - thanks :). Now wondering if anyone has tried the 906SE. Look as if 24 Watt limit on the port will mean that both lights spit out around 1800 lumens anyway, so perhaps no point in getting one. However on the Magicshine website, it does say "Some Motors require unlocking to get full watts for higher lumen". Anyone have any idea how to do that? I guess I could ask them.

Hi guys, I tried to find the answer on the internet but failed, I’m going to install a light that connect to my motor, my question is, can I just switch off the light to avoid battery drain? Ideally define the f1 or f2 buttons on the control thumb? Looks like if you connect a light and it will be always on, which I think it’s not logical at all at daytime. Thanks!

I believe that quote refers to BOSCH motors, BROSE are open from day one.
24W should put out approx. 2200-2400 lumens, for EBIKE mode with the auto adjust.
However, you may run in normal mode, where the 906 puts out: 4500, 2500, 1800, 800 lumens, whereas the 902 puts out: 3000, 1500, 1000, 450.
So you could try connecting to the motor but running normal mode, and getting 2500 or 1800 lumens out of a 906, that's better than max 1500 possible of the 902.
It also give the option to run by separate battery and get full 4500 lumens when needed, or Y-harness the rear light output to get 36W (~3500 lumens).
I would go for the 906

Can anyone confirm if you can wire a tail light if you use the Magicshine headlight? I don’t see such an offering on their website.
Lupine of course offers this and sells a Y cable with the tail light. Could you use the Lupine wiring harness and the Magicshine 906s light? I’m compelled by the much lower price point of the 906 and the on off button on the lamp. Thoughts?

I managed to get the 906s operational but at higher brightness the bike shuts down the power to it and then the light has to be changed back to the low setting with an alternate power source.

I’m not sure if lupine uses the same adapter as magicshine to connect the light wire to the hardwired cable.

For 906s
DRL will run no issue
Single light will run up to medium which is 1600w
Dual lights will run up to low with is 1800w
I don’t think strobe will run

The biggest pain is if you accidentally put it on too high of a brightness then you have to reset the light with an alternate power source as it turns back on to the setting it was turned off with.

FYI, I finally figured out how to get into “EBike Mode” which matches to max power of your bike.

Hold down the power button for 8 seconds, the button will then flash red when set. You get Low, Medium, and a high setting. It will also auto adjust based on lighting conditions. I’m not entirely sure on lumens but it was fairly bright on high.

Glad to hear it can work. Thought I'd try to save some money over the Lupine products and was worried I'd be stuck with a problem.

There is an Ebike variety for the ME2000 which is cheap because it doesn’t come with a battery. Make sure to order the Brose power cord with them. I’m not sure on Lupine.

Also, the green plug is for powering a front light.

My MagicShine 906S finally showed up today, 3 weeks after placing my order. I managed to get the light installed this evening and it works! Or worked anyway. I took a little spin in the yard with the lamp working. Just before I put the bike away I cycled through the settings, single clicking on the power button. Once it hit a certain setting, the light powered off and the bike threw an error. Power cycle the bike, turn on the lamp, lights up, dies, same error. I'll have to check the error in the manual tomorrow, but my battery is also a little low so I figure I'll charge it up and try it again later.

Anyone else experience similar issues?

Dang it, sounds like this is what I'm running into. What did you use as an alternate power source? Thanks!

You would think they would have it in eBike mode when sold as an eBike light without the battery.

It was a battery for a different magic shine light I had.

Try turning the bike on and holding down the lights power button for 8 to 10 seconds to get it to ebike mode. The button on the light should flash red once in ebike mode.

Good thinking but no such luck. Holding it down it does the same flash and error. I'll have to hit up the LBS as they sell MagicShine lights there and will hopefully let me use the battery pack to reset mine. Thanks.

Got my issue resolved. Dropped by the LBS and they had a demo unit on wall. Plugged mine into the battery and enabled eBike mode by holding down the power button ~10 seconds. Now it cycles through three settings (low/auto, mid, high).

One thing I didn't anticipate is that the power button on the light no longer shuts it off. It's controlled by the bike, so when the bike is on, the light is on. Which is fine, I guess?

It should be ok or you can unplug the light if worried about range.

I got my 906s after several weeks and one snafu where they shipped only the cable. Installed pretty easily. Knew from this thread to use e-bike mode off the bat. Only tested a few laps around the block but so far so good.
One thing seems odd and maybe someone can tell me a better way. In e-bike mode the light is always on and cannot be manually turned off as far as I can figure. Riding 99% off road I don't really want the added drain on the battery. I found the only way is to put the light in standard mode...then the off button works. Plan is to turn it on put and put in e-bike mode for use..which should be fairly infrequent.
I sure would like to compare side by side with the Lupine. To me the beam seems a bit unfocused. Based on very very limited testing. Even still, not sure I'd splurge for the Lupine. That's a lot of money...maybe if night riding was something I did a lot.

As reported above you can simply disconnect the cable too to disable the light. I might look at printing a couple of rubber plugs to keep on the ends for this purpose.

One thing I learned from testing is that I want a helmet light too!

Unless it causes problems I’ll just manually turn the light on and off using standard mode and then enable e-bike mode for operation.
