Probably a bit niche but I've had a tough time settling down a new SLX drivetrain on my bike - various skipping chain & alignment issues. The last piece of the puzzle I solved yesterday. There has been a persistent problem with the chain rollers not meshing with the largets sprocket. I wondered if it was a stiff link, so put the bike in the stand, spun the cranks & marked the chain with a sharpie where it jumped the sprocket. This showed the chain would jump at random points on the chain, ruling it out.
Next I marked the sprocket & sure enough, each time the spot came round, the chain would skip the sprocket tooth. So I dropped the chain to a lower gear & noticed one tooth on the sprocket was slightly bent with corresponding witness marks on the chain plates. Bent it back with a plumbers wrench & it's all good.
No idea how it happened, maybe dropped on the floor somewhere along the line & if this helps anyone, then it's all good.
