Hi,

I just got my Orbea Rise from last week, delivered by G-Bikes in Westerlo (Belgium).
This is my first eMTB.
I had a Scott Spark RC mountainbike before, but needed 'support' on the uphills.

I live in Kapelle-op-den-Bos (center of Belgium), and I am 61 years old.
I am a freelance IT Consultant but I do make custom wheel builds as a hobby ;-)

Today did my first ride on a local mountainbike trail, need some more experience in tuning/setting-up the Profile 1 / Profile 2 settings.

Welcome! Love the bike!
What would be your own dream wheel build for a SC Bullit 😊

Well,

It depends on the rider weight, also of course on the budget, but I normally use either DT Swiss or Shimano XTR hubs.
I always use Sapim spokes as they are based in Belgium and they have excellent spokes.
90% of my builds are using Sapim CX-Ray.

The DT Swiss 350 hub is price/quality the best combination, and suppose you change your drivetrain from Sram to Shimano, you can easily change the rear driver from XD to multi-spline for example. DT240s is a bit lighter, but double the price of the dt350 but also very popular and easy to maintain hub.

I recently did a build with a dt240s oil slick hub set, which is really really pretty.

On my Rise I have currently the standard Race Face R30 wheels, which I will upgrade to Shimano XTR with centerlock 203F/180R straight pull with Sapim CX-Ray. Regarding the rim, not decided yet, but I have very good experience with Nox Composites, but I might consider the Race Face Carbon ARC rim.

I always prefer tubeless set-up, and have very good experience with the Reserve Fillmore valves. That is a no brainer for me.

Ron, thanks!

Didn’t know the Sapim we’re from Belgium: best spokes and chocolate, both key MTB components of a great ride 🤣

I like the 350 hub too.

Does building for ebikes change your perspective? Many manufacturers say their hubs and or rims are specked for eeb’s, but that’s not the same as saying they have been designed for eeb’s. Although some are starting to come on board with those.

At the budget end of ‘designed for eeb‘ complete wheel builds, I’m very happy with my new 27.5 RaceFace affect R eMTB rear specific wheel on the back of a stock Bullit R (so it was RaceFace Alu + 370). I only changed due to a disaster (don’t ask 🤣) and needed something lowish budget + available. I’m pleased so far - it’s more direct on exactly the same tyre/pressure and I’m referring to the ride feel steep down hill, berms and little jumps, not the pick-up of the hub (which is obviously better too).

A durability report is due (hopefully) a long time in the future.

Do you have a view about steel axles, steel cassette hub, oversized drive-side bearings and materiel for the hoop for a full-fat eeb rear wheel build?

Well honestly until today I only did builds for race bikes and cross-country mountainbikes.

Considering the weight of the e-bikes I think that you for sure need minimum 28 spokes or even 32 spokes, and some 'heavier' spokes.

Probably also the spoke nipples should be from brass instead of alu, but I will dig into that when building my own set ;-)
