HELP! Major decision to be made

Hello everyone my name is Scott

Im new to the E-Bike world and could really use some help.
Iv been riding all my life pretty much and want to pick myself up an ebike.

Iv watched a lot of reviews and comparisions and need some advice. Im stuck between the

Specialized Turbo Levo Comp 2020 (Specialized 2020 Turbo Levo Comp )
and the
Vitus E-Sommet VRX 2020 (Vitus E-Sommet VRX E-Bike (XTR-XT 1x12) 2020 | Chain Reaction Cycles )

They are both £5000+ so dont want to rush into buying without getting some sound advice.

Any input you have would be appreciated.

You probably need to ask yourself a couple of questions first to help decide which direction you want to go in.

Proportionally, will you be spending more time throwing yourself down mountains or exploring trails.

If it's mainly throwing yourself down mountains, then the VRX would be the logical choice as it's more spec'd in that direction but still more than capable of bumbling about - but probably won't be quite as comfortable (though not necessarily) as a Levo.

Or if you're more exploring with some throwing yourself down mountains, then maybe the Levo would be more your choice.

They're both capable bikes, but are both focused slightly differently.

Also ask yourself how capable you are mechanically and how you feel about potential warranty issues. The Levo will be far easier to have issues sorted out. Though the VRX you can still take to a bike shop and pay them to do things and for warranty work, do the same and hopefully claim back through wiggle/crc.

Hi Scott,

Good advice above; consider also that:

the Shimano motor in the Vitus is due to be replaced soon so you will have last years motor. I have a Vitus which is now on its' third motor. It has been a great bike but wait for the new motor if you want one (at £5K).

the Levo is unlikely to make it thro' a Scottish winter without lots of downtime. Go into Dales and quietly ask them for their honest opinion on the strengths of the Specialised ebikes motors. Also, the quality of the components on the Comp is poor compared to the Vitus VRX.

If I couldn't wait for the new Shimano motor to arrive, and I had £5k ready to go, I think I would buy the new Bosh powered Radon Render 10HD.

Slightly biased as I own a Sommet, but I still think its the most capable all round EMTB out there in terms of riding ability, it will handle all terrain from gnarly DH and bike park stuff, to just potting around on fire roads - this is mainly due to the geometry and suspension platform, plus the external 504wh battery saves weight.

However as @Cisco says the new Shimano motor, with bigger batteries is round the corner, the basic platform of the E-Sommett hasn't been changed in 3 years now aside from component changes between model years, and I suspect it will be replaced with an all new model later this year fro 2021.

At this moment in time, in terms of full fat EMTB motors/systems the Bosch Gen 4 is the newest and most recently updated, and a lot of the bikes using it are great. The current Shimano motors are the longest in the tooth, and the Brose in the Specilized is getting on for 2 years old now. The Brose, as used by Specilized doesn't have a great reliability record amongst members on here, but their warranty process is the best out there. Dealing with CRC/Wiggle can be a PITA, though any LBS that is a shimano service centre should be able to warranty the battery/motor/etc.

We love to say one motor is better than the other on here, but the reality is out on the trail its much of a muchness out of the main ones, and getting the bike that allows you to ride how you want, and fits you, is still the main thing to base a decision on.

If you want a bike that kind of splits the middle between the Levo and the E-Sommet, I would look at the White E150 range - it still has 150mm travel like the Levo, but the geometry makes it far more capable over the rough stuff and if you want to get agro, and you can easily bump up the fork travel to 160mm if you want. The Levo and Sommett are very different bikes - the Vitus equivalent of the Levo in terms of intended use is really the E- Escarpe.

Lots of good bikes out there now, so spoilt for choice.

You have given me a lot to think about.

Im probably not commiting to anything till end of June/July time so hopefully some of the new bikes will be annonced.

External batteries are a big thing for me as I dont think they look great but I would imagine that Vitus will make the battery Internal with the new motor and Whyte bikes are catching my eye too.

Just need to be patient and see what gets annonced next month.

Hi. Like you I did a great deal of research. I went for the Tubro Levo Comp The reason was many things. Specialized shop nearby, walk mode for steep unrideable terrain , 700WH battery to enable a whole days riding on one charge, dropper post and aesthetics- battery in the frame. 12 weeks in and I love the bike. No regrets. Steve. P.s fitted Mudhugger guards.
