I've never been able to do that though. I always end up with either a leatherman pushing the links together, or the opposite ends of the opposite side plates. Or take the tension off the chain, hold the chain so the quick link is horizontal and the links either side hang down vertically, then squash them together with pliers so the quick link separates.

Putting the new one on is fairly straight forward, if it's an sram derailleur you can press the little button to lock it forward, if it's a shimano you'll want to disengage the clutch (this is all the same for taking it off too) then hold it forwards slightly as you feed the new chain round. Make sure you feed it through the derailleur the same as the old one came out, it's quite easy to feed it the wrong way - it will still work but be noisy, not shift well and eventually will wear through.

Ideally have the quick link on the top run, then to close it up you can just push down on the pedals and the pressure will be enough to lock the link into place.

If you have a circlip remover, you can also use that between the links to close up the quick link.
