Meet at 10:00 am ready-to-ride, Sat 15th Jun by the right side of the cafe veranda, overlooking the big field.

The postcode for Sherwood Pines is NG21 9JL, but ignore the sat nav when you turn off the public road and just follow the signs for the car park. Your reg no will be scanned on the way in and you pay £11 at the pay station before you leave. Don't forget or you will get stopped at the barrier, get blocked in and have to walk all the way back to pay! (And then back again).

Expect about 20 miles if we do all that I have planned (plus any sessioning). That distance can be shortened by popular request on the day.

The route is different to previous rides although some sections will be common. The majority of the worst obstacles are avoidable, the jumps are all roll-able if you prefer. If you don't fancy even the alternative route then do what I did at first, walk the bike down (or up) the worst bits! Usually, the camaraderie of supportive riding buddies gives everyone a skills boost! If you are comfortable with a red trail anywhere then you will be OK.

Expect some of the best parts of the red & blue trails, plus the WW1 trenches area and many of the off-piste trails in the area. We will also be heading over to the NCB land for some single-track trails over there. In amongst that lot, we will be riding over the biggest hill in the area to visit Vicar Water park and the cafe, which will be about half way around. We won't be doing the desert this time.

For those of you who have already been to Pines and done the regular trails, you won't see much you recognise. Anything that is tricky has a way around it. Nobody will have to ride outside what they are comfortable with just to stay with the group.

Because it is that time of year there is a lot of brambles, nettles and bracken. Most of the really bad stuff has been cleared, but it does grow quickly! If you bring bare legs, expect to collect some scars.

Eyewear is strongly recommended, helmets mandatory; there are a lot of low hanging branches. If you have ridden the red at Pines before but are nervous about the thought of "going off-piste" then don't be. I usually stop at the trickier sections to let riders have a look at it first, until I get the feeling for the skill level of the individuals. But in the end the choice is yours whether you tackle any particular feature. I am not professional guide and I am not charging for my time, this is meant to be a fun day out.

There is a lot of shattered wood about, plus the brambles. Those without tubeless tyres and sealant, come prepared.

I have done quite a few of these rideouts in the Pines and surrounding area and judging by the feedback, they have always been good fun. Allow 3.5 - 4 hours as there is always a lot of piss-taking and general chit- chat taking place. Search in the Rideouts section or check the bottom of this page for links to previous outings.

There is a full-service bike shop on site, plus café and a very good toilet block, loads of parking available.

If more than 6 riders turn up, there will be frequent headcounts.

Please trust me on this; if you get lost in the off-piste areas, there is a good chance that you will have to find your own way back. Those who are not lost will have to decide how long to spend looking for you. So follow the trail instructions, and be nice to everyone you meet! :)

Here was the last one, there are others, look under Rideouts and "Sherwood Pines".

Sounds a good day is a full face helmet recommended? Only done the red there so be nice to see other parts of it
I don't wear a full face on this route, but many do. If you have any doubts at all then wear your full face, you won't look out of place.
I have removed from the route the two drops that I used to do (but still found scary) and deserved a full face. I dropped it because too many people were refusing to attempt them and one guy that attempted one of them tore both hamstrings on one leg. He's OK now. :) He was OK about it with me, but I still feel a bit guilty. I did tell him it was really tricky and said that I wouldn't be doing it that day as it was so loose. Maybe I should have been more convincing?
We will be passing the bottom of both of them, so you can have a look and see what you think.

When I find a complex and satisfying drop, it only lasts a while. Then the scrambler bikes find it and ride up it. After a dozen rides it is impossible to ride down it again on an mtb; well, by me at least. :giggle:

Part of the reason for choosing Sat 15th June was to get the better weather, but even if it is raining, Pines in June will be so dry that it will just soak up the rain. It was going to be Sun 16th June until I noticed that it was Father's Day! Can't have you guys missing out meaningful time with the family! :)

I checked out the route today and I did 19.8 miles, close enough to the 20 I forecast. I spent some time cutting down some brambles that would have had your eye out and many lots of nettles that were taller than my bars!
The trails I rode were mostly deserted, no groups or families clogging up the trails.

In 20 miles, I came across only 8 unavoidable puddles, the rest of the trail was either damp and grippy or the puddles were small enough to avoid. Perfect!

When I got to Vicar Water, I called in at the Cafe and saw this:
Vicar Water Menus.jpg

The detail menus are sure to be different when we turn up, but you get the idea. I have seen what people were eating on previous visits and everything looked very good. (Me, instant coffee and a flapjack - £4, although I nearly weakened at the thought of mushy peas and mint sauce!!) I'm not planning on having any more than my usual, but the choice will be yours! Just don't take too long eating it!

I’m up for this as long as it’s not pouring down, wife’s out with fell walkers so I’m free 🥳🥳
I have found the following forecast to be quite accurate, especially in the last 3 days. Mostly we will be in the woods, so any "rain" that is 30% or less you can ignore.

I just got back from a day out at Pines with @Zagora. He couldn't make the guided ride, but he could do today. I was going anyway, so we rode together. I offered to do the same route as the guided ride next week and he was happy to follow my lead. The weather was kind and the trails were dry and grippy. We had a great time; we even did a bit of tree clearance! (later edit: lumberjacking!) There were two very long trees across the trail. One was 7" dia at the trail and the other next to it was 3". Lots and lots of sticky out branches had to be cleared so that we could get to the trunks. We removed a section from both trees to clear the way. Very satisfying and those that do next Saturday's ride will be able to admire our handiwork. The Vicar Water Cafe did its usual sterling service. I stuck with my usual instant coffee and a flapjack (£4) and @Zagora opted for a pastie and a cup of tea. He seemed happy with his choice. He bought mine, nice! :)

The trails are riding very well indeed, although some of the off-piste fast singletrack could do with some nettle & bramble clearance. I am not going to be able to do that before next Sat, so I repeat my advice to cover your legs.

I covered 21 miles, but I did a bit of tooling about whilst I was waiting for @Zagora, who had been delayed in traffic. Therefore, I will stick to my forecast of 20 miles for the guided ride (or less by common assent).

Had a great ride at Pines today with Steve. Unfortunately I can't make the group ride on 15th June so we agreed to meet today as he wanted to do a trial run of the route he's planned for next weekend.
Most of the time I didn't know where we were but was happy to just follow. Steve has an amazing knowledge of the whole area and the route he chose was perfect. A mix of the best sections of the red and blue and the rest was off-piste. There is so much more riding there than I ever imagined.
Several times we wound our way through and along the old trenches. We rode lots of the drops, crested the top of the slag heap, did a couple of runs at the bikepark/downhill area and lots of threading our way along small and fast trails, some of them being quite overgrown so best to wear long riding pants as opposed to shorts.
We stopped at the cafe at Vicar Water (I didn't know this existed) and there's lots of riding near there.

It was an epic day, lots of chatting, a good steady pace and all the drops were rollable or could be avoided so it will appeal to both new and seasoned riders.
Thanks for a great day Steve.

I was out there again today. All the trails are still grippy and not wet. Still a few puddles in the usual places but as before not many that are unavoidable. Pines seems to have an unbelievable ability to soak up rain during the tree & shrubbery growth season.

The more the merrier! :) At present numbers at least.

Twelve is a sensible maximum, otherwise the "train" gets too long; on one complex section the front of the train was waiting for the rear of the train to cross in front of them.

Early on, I once had 19 turn up and that was a nightmare to manage. Following that I introduced headcounts at every stop for larger numbers. I got one of my mates to ride half way down the group if it was bigger than seven. That seemed a good idea until he took a wrong turn and got half the group lost (within the first five mins!). It was 20 mins before we were reunited. Then I started describing where we were headed and what the next turn point was. I asked riders to make sure the guy behind made the turn etc. Now, I haven't lost anyone for years!

One bloke brought his wife, which of course is perfectly OK, but she was a novice rider, she even had a wicker basket on the front! They were soon more than half a mile behind and I had to engage them in conversation about whether this trail was really for them. They sensibly decided to call it a day and without making a fuss (thanks). After that I started to describe what the trail was like and what sort of skill level was appropriate. Despite that, another bloke brought his heavily pregnant wife (the consensus was 7+ months). She was a good rider, but we were all very nervous about her tackling the first of the more challenging drops. I'm sure she would have ridden it but I offered her an easier alternative and everyone breathed a sigh of relief when she took it. :) She and I both survived the experience. :)

Well that became a wet one!

Only @weiran turned up in the end. The ride started well in sunshine and warmth. The trails were wet from last night's rain and we picked up quite a bit of mud. We got an hour before it started to spot. Just as we got to the Vicar Water Cafe it started to rain, so we left the bikes outside where we could see them and sat down inside. My arse and lower back were so wet and muddy that I had to pile several layers of paper towels on the fabric covered seats. (I want to be allowed in again). The rain started up a steady downpour and stayed like that until we had finished our ride and got back to the car park, when it promptly stopped and the sun came out!

I would not normally choose such a wet day for a ride, but several weeks ago it looked OK. It's the middle of June for heaven's sake! Those who couldn't come, or took a good look at the weather and decided not to come, all made the correct choice. I discovered that my freshly proofed trousers are not waterproof anymore! I even had mud inside my waterproof socks!

By mutual decision we cut short the ride down from 20 miles to just over 16. The miles we missed out were all through the heavy undergrowth and with overhanging bushes. We were getting soaked from puddle splash, picking up water from the bushes and also the rain. Our bikes were making those awful sounding scraping noises.

But despite that we both had a good time; see the smiles on the selfie that Weiran took when he reports in. The only photo I took of Weiran didn't turn out.

There were lots of people about (for a running race I believe), but we saw nobody on the trails, not one!

By the way, there is a big event on at Pines on Fri 21st - Sun 23rd June. Lots of crash barriers, parking signs and Police warnings posted about traffic jams. I will be staying away.

Was good fun even in the rain, in fact the wet made some of the trails more interesting. Thanks for taking me around the off piste Steve. Some parts are pretty overgrown and hard to see!

Hopefully drier weather next time.
