GT85

Years ago I used to use nothing but GT85 on my chain. Before every ride a quick spray and away. When the bike had a good clean another spray on the chain and cogs and good as new.
Now in the bike shops are lines of lubes for chains including EMTB special ones.
So is GT85 ok to use on chains before a ride or are the others better.

I was the same ..I only started using a dedicated oil when it was pointed out that I could be contaminating discs & pads by overspraying.
As for e-lube ..marketing tosh if you ask me ..

GT85 now do a range of bike lubes, cleaners etc - I tried the bike wash last year and it was very good.

I only use it to de water the chain after using a chain cleaner and washing the degreaser off. it’s not a lubricant as such like oil as it evaporates and leaves a Teflon residue but it’s not long lasting and your drive train will wear out quicker than using proper chain lube
i lube the chain after it’s evaporated/dried and also put plastic carrier bags over the discs and callipers when I’m spraying it around
it works great for de gunking/cleaning the cassette as well

I should add to be mindful of bearings and GT85 as well. it can actually wash away any grease and kill pivot and hub and bottom bracket bearings pretty quick. The propellant in the aerosol is actually a solvent and will wash away any grease
if you don’t believe me smear some grease on something and give it a spray. It makes short work of removing it.
its good stuff and has its uses but it’s not really a lubricant

I use wet lube when it's wet and dry lube when it's dry.
Wet lube resists wash off, but it's a bit sticky and can be awful in dry dusty conditions, which is why in dry conditions I use...
Dry lube sets dry after the carrier fluid has evaporated. It resists muck pick up.

I use GT85 as a degreaser to clean the chain, cassette etc. It’s also good to wipe down the frame/ wheels etc with, and smells nice!

It's the only thing I use, and reading some of the chain / cassette issues some are having its not doing a bad job.
I did buy a chain cleaner which came with a bottle of lube but only used it once.
As for doing other products it's part of the WD40 family

I was giving my new Focus a good coating of GT85, but then I noticed that some of the plastic components were cracking, and breaking. The only reason I could put this down to was the liberal application of GT85, so I’m less keen to use it now, especially in the quantity I was.

Another good one is good ol fashion 3 in 1 oil. Remember as a kid always using that on my bike chain.

A mate of mine used this on his chain and measured the wear, ironically is wasn’t scientifically valid but got almost the same range out of a chain using GT85 as he did with any other lube, some older gents use 3 in 1. That’s seem to do fine. Me personall, I use the WD40 wet lube, it smells lush and does a reasonable job, I prefer it to the muc off stuff as it’s easier to get off.

It’s all I have ever used on my road bike and mountain. I use it after every ride, after washing and to chase moisture from all the bearings and to lube the fork and shock seals. I know there is a previous post saying it’s bad for bearing grease, but I’ve been using it for years without issue. The local ebike shop in Cumbria swear by it too, do all their rentals with it. I guess ultimately it’s your choice.
