Anyone else playing this? In a red wine induced moment of madness I splurged a grand on a Valve Index VR kit last year once I heard Alyx was coming. My plan was to flog the gear once I’d finished Alyx and break even.
It was delivered within a couple of weeks and I set it up and bought Boneworks. I was amazed by Boneworks but after minutes of playing I was overwhelmed by nausea. I contacted Valve and asked to return the kit on the basis that VR wasn’t for me and they agreed.
But I didn’t want to return it, I wanted to play Half Life 3! I tried Asgard’s Wrath, which was better, but i was still feeling ill. I then tried Vader Immortal (via Revive) which again was better. I stuck with it and tried different things to reduce the nausea and gradually found my tolerance increased to the point where I finished Boneworks and Vader Immortal.
Then Alyx was released and I’m able to put hours in on a session before feeling any ill effects and even then to be honest my hands hurt from the controllers rather than nausea.
And oh my lord, WHAT A GAME ALYX IS. No spoilers on the story but it is nothing short of spectacular. It’s has everything you’d expect from a game in the Half Life series; innovative puzzles, combat, horror, humour and a compelling story. It isn’t entirely perfect, there are things that I was disappointed to discover (no melee combat meaning that ammo conservation is paramount, no running and no jumping) but to be honest everything else about the game is so utterly engrossing you do quickly forget about it.
If anyone is on the fence about trying this I can’t recommend it highly enough.
