Fireproof Battery Bags

Are the fireproof bags they sell at Amazon, etc. really effective or necessary? Will they actually reduce the chances of a fire or explosion coming from a rechargeable bike battery? Thanks from Colorado

They may help contain it slightly but as they are cheap Chinese creations don't expect much.
If you watch videos of lithium battery fires on youtube they are quite violent so a think bag probably isn't going to completely contain it for long.

Back in the day when I used to race motorcycles, there was an e-Motorcycle demonstration race at Silverstone circuit. In the collecting area which had a concrete surface, one of the e‐Motorcycle batteries caught fire. None of the fire services could put the fire out, it kept on burning and burnt a deep hole in the concrete. So the collecting area had to be closed and we had to use an alternative area. No way any bag will stop or even contain a battery fire

Have there been any accounts of reputable, looked after brands of batteries just suddenly catching fire? since owning an e-bike I've been know to get a lot of stories sent to me about the damage they do when they catch fire, but all are cheap Chinese batteries or DIY conversions as far as I know

There's not a lot of good, factual info that I've come across. In fact, just this morning I saw this article from NPR. The author clearly writes, "Hodgens said it appears an extension cord was running from the upper apartment down to what fire officials believe was an after-market charger for the bike, which was parked in the vestibule of the building. Hodgens said while the bike was being charged in this case, there have been other fires involving bikes not being charged at the time."

At least this indicates some awareness that janky setups for charging our batteries can contribute to the fire problem.

Should the worst happen, its going to be easier to lift the bag and chuck it out the window than try to remove it either from the bike or propped up against the skirting board.

Lipos don't lik to be treated badly and they rebel. I think a lot of these sensational fires come from people using the wrong chargers. If you over charge a lipo you damage the vacuum they live in and lithium burns on contact with oxygen.
