Well here is a hughly subjective question for my first post.
I have tried out an ebike have ridden Bikes for a number of years.

my riding tends to be riding up Fireroad or bridleways to the top of a steep hill and then finding a steep natural run back down to the bottom and rinse and repeat

I loved the two ebikes I tried it allowed me to get twice the runs in I normally would

I tried a Santa Cruz heckler and a Merida E160. I will confess to being a Santa Cruz fanboy but I think I preferred the Merida which has rocked my world

my local bike shop is offering me a good price on a 2020 E-160 which has me very tempted. I liked the Shimano steps motor and I know it’s classed as under powered compared to the newer Bosch and browse and soon to be EP 8 but I found eco mode more than enough for me to get up the climbs

my point is I’m looking for a relatively light weight ebike for bombing down steep natural tracks I think the Merida hits those boxes

Is there any other bikes to look at, I will be lifting it over fences and gates and as you go up to the bigger and slacker bikes the weight really creeps up

thanks for reading.

The Merida is a great all rounder and a fantastic bike. I'm still riding my 2019 and have no plans to replace it. Also there's a world wide shortage of eBikes so waiting might be a really bad idea.

However if you NEVER leave eco you might also consider bikes that are meant to be low power bikes like the LaPierre eZesty or Levo SL. You'll save up to 5 kilos in weight for lifting over those fences but lose some power and battery capacity. I also have an eZesty and it's a great bike. Similar geo to the Merida except a higher bottom bracket. The Fazua motor is really quiet.

Personally I'd stick with the Merida. It's a bike that'll grow with you as it's so versatile. Kind of a goldilocks bike. If your riding changes in the future it's an easy bike to upgrade to suit different disciplines.
