E 8000 display blacked out .

Today while riding I glanced down at my display to check how fast I was going and the display was blacked out , the assist was still there and everything seemed to work , so I am thinking the LED display is the issue . Once I got home , I turned the bike off , left it for 5 minutes while I went and got a beer and went back to the bike and turned it on again , the display lit up as normal , but alas , my wife rang me just as I began to check it out and by the time I had fobbed her off , the screen had gone blank again , this was in the shade and I could see that the screen was Grey , not Black , but when switched off again the screen went black . I attempted to go again but the display would not come back on . Anyone had similar issues to this with the E 8000 screen and was there a fix or was it replaced ? Mine has about 6 months left of the 2 year warranty . I really need to connect up my phone (Steps unlocker) to return the settings to STD if I am to claim warranty I think , or are the settings like Country etc. in the motor and not the display / controller . I have mine set as USA to get another 5 kph out of it before the motor assist drops out . My LBS is very good , but they are not going to lie to Shimano for me I think .

Maybe the plug has come loose in the back of the display... Although I'm not sure if the control unit will work if it had... ?

No , if the plug is not fully home the display will not work at all , I have pulled out all the plugs and replaced them firmly in their receptacles with no change in the way the unit is behaving . I am going to talk to the Ebike specialist at my local bike shop this morning and see what he has to offer in terms of experiences of other instances of similar scenarios . It appears to me that there is some issue in the head unit where heat or vibration cause a breakdown of the continuity of the circuitry . I have experience of 35 years of working with electronic devices and machinery controlled by electronics , so I have some insight into what remedial measures can be checked simply and quickly and which operations need specialist tools and a dose of good luck to locate and fix the fault . I am not at all confident anything but replacement of the head unit will fix this issue .

I had something similar, turned out to be a cable that had been squashed between the battery and the frame. (Focus Jam2)

In my case it gave intermittent blank screen (and no power), but mostly off. I took the bike to the dealer and he took it into the back room and emerged 10 mins later saying "its good to go!" But as I grabbed hold of one of the grips and turned the bar, the screen went black. "Oh, that's not good" he said, and I had to leave the bike with him. Considering it was a drop motor and remove battery job, it was relatively quick and cheap to fix. The longest time element was waiting for a new cable.
 
I have not been able to do anything as the issue is not occurring consistently , the day after the issue occurred the display worked as it should . I will need to ride the bike for half an hour or so on a warm day and see if it occurs again or not ( I believe it is heat related ). Intermittent problems and faults are the hardest to diagnose due to the inconsistent nature of the fault , you have to have the diagnostic equipment there when the issue happens or get the bike straight to the dealer when it happens . I will get it sorted eventually .

I have had that one too , but then , when that was a cable problem the assist does not work nor does anything else , my issue this time has very different symptoms . The Technician at my LBS said the computer diagnostic app should show what the issue is , but I have to have the issue occurring at time of diagnosis for that to be a possibility .

This error looks like it is internal to the display, so it should be changed in warranty. I had mine changed in warranty because it was not fully hermetic and moisture was showing in the display and obscuring the numbers

My e8000 display sustained some crash damage just under a year ago and has recently succumbed to this error - tiny hole in the casing let in moisture, so winter has led to it not working. 24 hours on the radiator had it working again, but I've replaced it anyway.

Symptoms were exactly the same, assist working as normal and backlight on the display working but no actual output from the display (just black).

Edit to add: assist settings etc. are stored in the motor not the display, after swapping to a new display all I had to change was the setting to turn off the infuriating "beep" :)

Thanks for that reply mate , I can now proceed with that knowledge as I don't have to worry about the settings . Great !
