I replaced the S-ride shifter as it gave up the ghost on me. I got a 'Box 2 E 9 speed'. Looks about the same but a bit higher quality I think. It came with a nice stainless cable, ready to install.
Anyway, After lubing and wiping clean the new cable I found it got hung up around the bottom bracket. I took the motor out and found an inline shift sensor with cable ends on each side, (no wonder I couldn't get it farther than that). I simply pulled cable ends from shift sensor and completed threading the shift cable through each little opening one at a time, but pulling the motor was more work than I expected to do.
If you find yourself doing this same job, take a picture of wire placement before removing the motor. It's a tight fit in there and it helps to know where the wires go. Here are some photos of the job.
