Cube Stereo Hybrid 140 HPC Race 2020 / 2021 - need closeup photos of Chain guide bolt points

Hi All,

I'm new here. I have a Cube Stereo Hybrid 140 HPC. During a ride, the rear derailleur got caught on a fallen branch and the chain came off the Crank, The only way I could release it was to remove the Chain Guide. Unfortunately I did not take a photo before removal and now I can't figure out how to bolt it back on. If anyone could kindly post close up photos, so I could see how to mount it back, I would be most grateful.

The e*thirteen chain guide that bolts into the bosch motor?

There's just 2 bolts that go into holes on the motor itself

Thanks Mate, that is super helpful and yes it is the e*Thirteen guide. Never mind the dirt, it's a Mountain Bike after all.
Follow up question, when I removed mine. I have 2 bolts and 2 thin spacers, is there a thicker spacer between the guide and motor? I can't tell from the photos, but it appears that in the top bolt the thin spacer is behind the guide plate arm , whereas in the bottom bolt it is behind the guide plate arm.

When I tried to bolt back the guide in the same holes, it felt like there should have been a thicker spacer, as the guide could not sit flush with the motor as the frame was getting in the way at the top.

Yeah there’s some thicker spacers that are a bit of a pain to get on as they go between the guide and the motor

Sounds like you might have lost those when you removed it?

Right buddy. I was doing a service of my pedals at lunch so pulled it off for some pics

Please excuse upside down and stuff I’m still on my phone
It’s a plastic spacer. 6mm ID for the bolt. 12mm OD about 4mm thick. They may have been 6 or 5mm thick but I filed mine down to get it perfectly central.

Though those seem to have some little lock washers and mine are flat.

From memory, mine has a thin metal washer under the bolt head (before the guide), with both a thick and thin plastic spacer between the guide and motor. As shown in the pic above

The lock washer @emtbPhil mentions in the above pic are in fact thin plastic spacers, the points are to help hold it onto the bolt, but are not that effective!

Honestly bin the thing. 1st ride out on mine in some heavy mud last winter and it jammed up the front sprocket and chain around it. Over a 1000 miles on this bike and 2000 miles on my last bike and not once have I had a chain come off without these on.
Maybe it works for some but not for me.

The photo I took had this fitted -> Bolt, thin washer, chain guide, thick washer, plastic spacer
However it was rubbing on the chain and always has been since I got the bike

I sanded down the plastic washer and refitted like this -> Bolt, thin washer, thick washer, chain guide, plastic spacer

The chain is now smack bang in the middle of the guide. So I think it was probably fitted wrong by previous owner or factory.
I'm reluctant to remove mine because on my hardtail the chain jumped off the chainring and made a proper mess of the frame. Last thing I want is a gouge in a carbon frame

@emtbPhil you're a STAR!!! Thank you so much. I must have dropped the plastic spacers when I removed the guide. I was in the middle of nowhere, at that point, I just wanted to get the chain back on the ring, so that I could get going again. Lesson learnt. Thank you so much for the offer to 3D print, I'd love to take you up on that, but I live in Switzerland so postage is likely to be prohibitive. I'll see if I can find a plastic or Nylon tube of a similar diameter, and cut some spacers. Failing that, I may just take you up on your offer.

@MrPeaski, @mak, thanks for your input as well. I've done one ride without the guide already, and did not experience any issues, but will probably get it back on eventually just for peace of mind.

It does look like a standard M6 spacer - 6mm ID 12mm OD -- if you grab some nylon spacers in 5mm I reckon they'd work a treat
