Having a senior moment, as not had chain off for a while. Can it go back on any way, or does it have to go on a certain way. Picture is crank to right, with chain sitting on top of frame protector. Thanks in advance

Sram chains are usually not directional...but the powerlink is and will have an arrow to show direction.

to be sure it would be helpful to know the cassette/mech......e.g. 10/11 speed?

The arrow on the quick link?
There should be one on each link. and they point in opposite directions. indicating the direction of closure.
The easy way to remember how to mount them is so the curve of the plates follows the shape of the chainring and cassette. Like this...

SRAM 11sp Power Lock link also has arrows on it but it is not curved as Eagle so I think with 11sp it doesn't matter in which way it is installed ...
