Spotted this on singletrackworld.com and its started a bit of a debate. It does seem terrific value and anything that gets anyone onto a bike and out for a pootle cant be bad.
They may be ahead of the curve here for beginners. I was riding with two Trek owners today on their shiny new bikes. They were told by the guy at the bike shop to make sure that they use all the gears. They have been riding mtb for years and asked him why that advice. He said that they sell a lot of bikes to people who are buying an mtb for the first time, let alone an emtb. They never change gear, just use the power modes. Then they bring the bike back with a slipping chain. The LBS find a perfect cassette except for one cog that is totally worn!No gears
