I've never heard of this happening before. Luckily it was pretty much at the bottom of a descent. I heard some tinkling and felt something strange. Pulled up and my rear lever had nothing - just free play. I thought the caliper was off or a catastrophic leak - nothing. Then I thought I couldn't see any braking media on one of the pads. Upended the bike, took out the wheel and pads - yep, one was just the clean backing plate. Shimano B01S.
Put it back together and thought I'd just practice some drops - whoa; front wheel lockup for metres . It was loose over hard on a bit of a decline after the drops. It's bullshit that your front brakes do most of the braking - not off road. After some more practice I used a different area for braking - some rare moist dirt and grass - much more effective.
