These things happen from time to time, inevitable I guess. Out for a ride this evening. Nothing tech just a long straight farm track, downhill. Speed maybe 40kph? I was just doing a few tight radius turns with a pump when the front washed out. Everything slowed down and I became aware of my shoulder smashing into the floor. Next was the whip of my head as that went in. I jumped up pretty quick but I was definitely well shaken. The rock shaped hole in my lid is not a pretty sight. Bloody knee, wrist, elbow and shoulder. It’s all going to hurt tomorrow.

Magic Mary’s on dry hard pack. Deffo sub-optimal.

So take it easy guys and don’t let those mud tyres have you off.

I have a track record of my shoulder taking the hit (I've done both several times). There is a very great chance that a ligament that goes from the shoulder to your backbone will have been pinched by the shoulder blade. The pinched bit swells up and then rubs because it no longer just fits through the hole it used to slide through. The rubbing stops the swelling from subsiding, and ligaments are not known for rapid healing at the best of times. In addition the pain will not appear where the ligament was pinched but at one end, usually the shoulder end. This may manifest itself by an inability to raise your arm above elbow level and/or your elbow above shoulder level.

Go see a physio asap. Don't wait for it to get better on its own. The pain may stop eventually, but what will have happened is that your body has reorganised itself in reaction to the pain and you will be holding yourself differently and moving differently. By that time the problem will be harder to fix. Don't waste your time seeing your doctor and then waiting another 6-8 weeks to see an NHS phsyio. Go see a private physio asap. There are loads of them about, either get a recco from a friend or use Mr Google for Physios near me. It should cost you less than £50 for an hour's consultation, diagnosis and the start of treatment. You will be given some exercises to do and shown how to do them. You will be back to your normal in weeks rather than months. You know it makes sense.

I was going pretty slow yesterday on some flat tight technical bits locally and all of a sudden me and my bike came to an abrupt dead stop flinging me off to one side. I had not noticed some old chain link fence lying on the ground under some undergrowth and it wrapped around my flat pedal and bang, a dead stop. Took the breath out of me but no damage to bike or rider, just a sore hip and lower back. Think I will bring a set of wire cutters next time and remove that hazard.

Wonder if he'll go for body armour in the future ? Or be more like you and just wear a life jacket ?

Isn't it amazing the whole conversations you can have with yourself in those microseconds before impact. I had one the other week as I watched in slow motion the earth rising up to me
"Why did I take the chin bar off?"
"Cos you only needed it for the grade 5 trail not this easy bloody grade 2 trail"
"Well you're gonna learn now aren't youuuuu ....booof

Get well soon!

Well I had an over-handlebar fall dropping over a 2 foot into a rut the other week. Slow motion chin then helmet plus rh chest and wrist twist topped by knee thump and ankle graze. Into ride 10 miles with 20 to go. Running on adrenaline got me to the end, with a little help from my low output battery and kindness from friends. Now suffering sleepless nights and chest pains; after 2 weeks. Anyway I’m still here and bike is fine ? main lesson: Lean Back! ?

It's quite bizarre how you can still ride on with broken x/y/z when in the zone !

All I an say is be a pussy and wear some armour. It won't definitely stop an injury, but if you do have an off it might lead to a lesser injury !

It's also amazing how blissful that first night of sleep is when you get there !!! Hope you feel better soon ..

We all enjoy this sport/hobby, but it can lead to injury and it's only sensible to take steps to lessen those. Unfortunately, we're all human (well, most of us) so we think we're immortal until it happens to us and only then do we add protection to the bits we hurt it that experience !

I was thinking the same today on dry hardpack - time to take the mud tyres off! Hope you're OK.
