do you need to run the battery down or can it be charged no matter how much you have used

You can charge it at any point.

If you run it down from 100% to 0% then charge it, it counts as one cycle.

If you run it down from 100% to 50% then charge it back to 100%, it counts as half a cycle.....etc....etc.

Giant recommend that after a few partial charges you run it down to as near as 0% as possible, then charge it up to 100%

You might find that the battery health goes down then up again. Mine went down to 93% health after about 10 charges, then after a couple of 0% to 100% charges it went back up to 95%.

Giant also recommend that if you are not going to use the battery for a few months you use the 60% storage function on the charger, but that leaving it at 100% for a few weeks will not harm it, although that seems to go against advice you will see on the forums.

Warning Battery nerd here.

The better you treat your battery the longer it will last.

Only charge to full immediately before use and never leave it at 100%
You can charge at any time and should leave it at 60% all times it is not being actively charged or ridden.

Batteries start to degrade and if you leave it at full charge or run it all the way down to zero. This can be felt in under a year, with replacement in under 3 years.

Only charged to 100% before a ride and stored at 60% will give you 5+ years of service and 10ish until replacement.

There is no magic. No manufacture has a special program to preserve the battery. Most will show 100% charge and keep a reserve of .04 to .06 volts and this helps extend the number of cycles, but does not protect a fully charged battery. Manufactures battery health gauges are meaningless for the most part. Most will show 100% for far too long even if digitation is present.

Get yourself a wifi plug that you can set a timer on and turn on remotely. This way you can charge to 60% and start charging without being home.
