Anyone know how I can remove the need for a key, to remove the battery?

To remove the battery you need a key. In the UK thats generally not a problem. But in the Alps, you need to remove the battery before you put the bike on the chairlift. I'm worried I'll lose the key in the middle of nowhere. So...anyone got any tips or done a mod to remove the need for a key? The bikes rarely out of my sight when not secured at home, so I'm not worried about losing the security.

If it's a downhill bike park just leave the battery behind, or rent a bike.

Also the key is an AXA one - maybe contact them and see if they can supply a dummy barrel with a thumb turn or similar

I used to build a lot of custom motorbikes, and one of the things we used to do to conceal the key, was remove the key from its fob, glue that end into a bottle top, and glue the other end into the lock.

Thanks. Re removing the battery, my mates like to do long days out, as in 30/40 miles plus (check out "Kates big day out" type rides). Since my big accident where I spent 3 months in bed and the best part of 12 months in a wheel chair, I just can't stay with them without the assistance, so I'm going to need the battery at some point.

When I took my first van camping trip to Florida last year I accidentally locked my keys, and my dog, in the van at a gas station. When I took a 5-week cross-country trip last spring I word a spare key on a string around my neck 24/7. You could do the same with your battery key.

Just clone the keys. Bring 3 with you, you can't lose them all. (No saying that in a challenging way lol).

In Morzine they have indeed signs on the chairlift advising to remove batteries. In practise nobody does it, at least not last year. With internal batteries now that would also be a major hassle up to bikes like the Levo SL where you even can´t remove the battery at all.

On the other hand riding a lighter bike in Morzine with all the jumps is definitely more fun. So why not just leaving it in the apartment for park rides and only attach it for touring days with your mates?

And for securing the key in general, I guess all back or hip bags have some compartment with a little plastic hook to attach a key.
But apart from everything above it would be great if anyone comes up with an idea on how to change a shimano battery mount to work without a key

My Yakima roof rack has SKS locks that look simian in size to the Shimano AXA ones - however they are an optional extra and the rack actually come with a dummy plastic barrel that has an Allen bolt end - might see if this fit
