A lot of the new bikes launched over the past couple of days with the New Shimano motor have gone pretty big on sizing options, e.g the new Commencal's. Mondrakers have traditionally had the right geo for tall riders too.
With height comes weight too. With a bit of mid-life spread and being nearly 6'3", I'm 114 Kg (sorry for the mixed measurement systems!)
How much of a concern should the extra weight be, e.g. for a Levo? Are the larger frames also built to cope with more weight? I assume it puts more strain on all systems.
I have an XL Vitus e-Escarpe with a 488mm reach, a little short relative to some XL bikes which are reaching 510mm or more, but long compared to anything from a few years ago. My normal bike is a Scott Genius with 505mm reach and 5mm longer stem, so its 20mm longer in total. Doesnt sound much but 20mm is the difference between sizes for most brands. If you dont know what sort of Reach you want find out what reach your old bikes were for comparison.
Also worth noting that at 6ft4 there is much more potential for difference in leg to body length. Many 6ft4 riders can fit very long seat posts, me i must have short legs as i cant get away with more than 150mm dropper on a 520mm frame. So also knowing your max seat height will let you work out what bikes will suit.
I' m almost 6ft6, 280lbs; riding a levo 19 base model, with a 100 mm stem, because the bike was a bit short for me. Weight- Limit is 300 lbs for the alloy model, only for the cargo, excluding the bike. No carbon components. Yes, a different fork, brake and rear suspension ( Marzocchi Z1 160 mm; Hope Tech 3 V4 and Marzocchi CR with a spring 800 lbs. Perfect for me.
Hi - I'm 6'5'' and approx 120kg (all muscle I've had a CUBE action Team 160 and 140 in XL both plenty big enough, as was my Mondraker hardtail also XL - Now have a Haibike Allmtn in a 52 - most comfortable fit of them all. I replace the wheels with Stans Flow + Hope hubs, 155 hope cranks and as above Tech 3 V4 brakes - all essential imho if you're a 'big unit'.
