If you get a chance, whip the tyre off and repair the inside of the tyre, a bit like repairing an inner tube with a puncture repair kit. I.e. patch and vulcanising glue. No need to worry about it after that. The plug you're on about is more something to do on the trail if a big hole won't seal...
