Thanks for all the suggestions everyone! I’m going to look into piecing out my own “kit” and comparing the pricing.
The thing about me - I’m a tool nut. I strongly believe in having the right tool for the job, and nothing feels greater than having an obscure tool on hand for when it’s needed...
I’ve got several different bikes of various age and types, including two “modern” ebikes from Trek. Specifically a 22 Rail 9.8xt and a 22 Dual Sport+.
That means I’ve got a Bosch motor and a Trek/Hyena hub motor.
I’m thinking of pulling the trigger on a Park Tool PK-5 kit to get me started...
Don’t forget the part where the builds were changed to include different (often/always lesser) parts. Ie RapidDrive54 vs 108 and who knows what else.
I paid msrp but got 13% on accessories (must be a standard Trek thing - 13% in canada, 10 in the states?) after buying my 22 Rail 9.8xt
Either I haven’t noticed or mine doesn’t do it (yet). I’m assuming the 2022 smart system is just a 4th gen motor with no internal changes and just the protocol difference between components? (Ie the smart system isn’t considered 5th generation right?).
Sad news. My 22 Rail 9.8XT does in fact have the rapid drive 54 hub. The Trek websites (CA and US) were updated to show that this model comes with the 54T.
If I just purchase the part numbers listed in the YT video above, will it fit my model?
I was about to wait out an XL frame on my Rail 9.8xt, but I did the inseam measurement that my local Trek dealer recommended. Something about standing straight against a wall, with a stick and measuring tape (tons of YT videos available). Turns out while I’m 6’4”, I guess I’m more torsoy vs...
I’m eager to try this upgrade, because why not! I was surprised to find out that my 22 Rail 9.8XT also has “Rapid Drive 54”. Guess it was a 9.9 upgrade?
Are all the part numbers listed in the linked YT video above compatible with my bike?
I believe the Kuat systems are also expandable to 3 and 4 bikes. The Piston X is very cool, and has some premium features like tail lights, which I prefer so I don’t get rear ended. The NV has other neat features, like a work stand accessory plus both racks have ebike ramps to help with loading...
I have a Kuat Piston X and it’s great. Easy to configure for different bikes, plenty of space, holds 60-70 lb bikes. It’s not the lowest cost option but it has plenty of features that justify the price tag…
