Check the voltage when battery is fully charged. You can do this from charger port. If more than 42V its definately a faulty charger. Havent checked what is the giant charger full voltage but would expect 41.x volts as after that anu higher voltages starts to damage cells.
Have you compared the serial numbers of these bikes ? If the serials are close to esch other then it could be a bad batch where as serials wide apart could mean a systemic error for all bikes manufactured.
Interesting, I find auto almost impossible for technical areas. Other bikes I have had the brake levers have killed the motor engaging but Reign does not have brake control over power which leads power surge when brakes are released on technical terrain. I need to use manual settings, most offen...
How do you find the e+3 front?
I ordered the Reign as mail order and was a bit dissapointed of the lacking of slow speed compression tuning ability. I was not even looking for top performance as I am getting old(ish) and hence serious enduro riding I did alrealdy in 70`s (motorbike) but some...
Hearsay or black on white ?
As long as its verbal communication its not really worth much. I am expecting to see a written statement signed by Giant if its not a real issue. Without a written statement they could later deny responsibility of a serious damages caused by the crack.
Btw, I am...
How do you know ? Has Giant said publicly its rideable ? Do you take the personal responsibility if the crack is a fatal structural failure ?
I would only accept direct statement from Giant, which they will only issue when this problem is big enough hurting the sales. Seen this so many times...
Not sure what you mean mate? I thought the latest official info is that the crack is in filler material. The article I linked was particularly about aluminium filler material cracks.
You can not tell if a weld is strong just by looking it. It may crack later if not correct filler is used or if temperature has weakened the area.
Article about aluminium weld cracks
I think thats not enough. What we should do is to share the link to this disucussion with our LBS as well as to known EMTB journalists. To my experience a manufacturer tries to downplay the issue until the public pressure forces them to make a statement. A single individual is not enough but...
Well, Giant sold about 600.000 ebikes in 2019 and has grown almost double since. Whats the math says about 1% of that? I do understand that not every ebike sold is reign but still we are talking about hundreds or maybe thousands of bikes. I would not belittle that, instead I would expect any...
Yes, its interesting how to achieve flat surface from joining two sheets together unless they have redesigned the frame completely by removing the welding area seen on earlier bikes. I am surprised how advanced Giant is in applying hydroforming to produce different parts of the bike, so dont see...
@Spudley I believe the correct term is ”Hydraulic pressure cold welding” where the pieces are welded together with high pressure rather than melting the pieces together with high temperature as by conventional welding. Using a wide mold for the outside and more sharper mold inside means that the...
@Spudley could you post pictures inside the frame for both bikes just to check if pressure welding is faulty or not. Recall you saying that your wifeys bike is not riden yet and it already has a crack in paint.
If I compare the inside picture @Kevjob51 who has a smaller crack to @Endorium without crack and mine it looks like the two latter ones have clear signs high pressure being applied to the welding seam to weld the frame pieces together. On the other hand @Kevjob51 pressure welding seam does seem...
Oh, the black stripe on orange is dirt not crack. Thanks for correction.
Mine below looks pretty similiar, but only 25km so far so its too early to determine anything.
Would be interesting to see same inside of the frame picture for a bike with a lot of abuse and no cracks. That could help to determine what the a goos weld should look like.
Next thing would be to track if serial numbers are close to each other, that would indicate a bad batch where as a wide spread in serials would mean a design fault affecting all the bikes..
Could someone with a suspected crack remove the battery and take a piccie from the inside to see if this only a surface issue or goes deeper inside the frame…?
The chemistry of ebike batteries is the same as in many electronic cars. Charging constantly to 90-100% will shorten the lifespan of the battery. 100% for practical purposes is 4.2v/cell. For nominal 36 volt battery this means 42 volt is 100%. You can measure the voltage from the secondary...
