DT Swiss factory-built wheels are nice, but do not cross every box. First, even some of the heavy-duty wheels are still 28H which makes no sense. Secondly – and this is a bigger issue – DT wheels use alloy nipples which are known to be very soft, making serviceability quite poor. I can count at...
EXT E-Storia – pricier than the options listed so far, but worth every cent. Compatible with spring rates up to 800lbs/in, the best damping performance that's found at the moment and durable construction, including chrome plated steel shaft.
It might be a hit-or-miss situation. If you are willing to consider ratchet parts as consumables and replace them when and if needed, then you're fine.
If on the other hand, you are willing to invest more in the wheel department, Onyx hubs are hard to beat: instant engagement, silent when...
First, and foremost inspect that the frame with all of its linkages is in full working order. It would not be the first time when the reason for the dreaded clunk has been found from worn shock bushing, worn-out bearing or loose pivot bolt.
Had a small batch of titanium rear axles made for Voima. Grade 5 titanium, made in Italy, sells for 139€ + shipping. Shoot an email to info(att)4130.fi if interested.
That's one way to see it. On the other hand, one could argue that their view is that "more is more" when it comes to the amount of suspension travel. The lineup has moved steadily towards that.
Stamina and Voima are both bikes of the 1st order, especially the former!
Well, if can't come to terms with the fact that there will be something new, different – even possibly better – down the line, it's best to not buy anything. One would be 100% happy with the current option (whether it's a bike, a pair of sneakers, phone etc,) but the fear of missing out on...
To be more exact, the build process entails tightening and letting the spokes set under tension for 24 hours – three times. In other words, there's quite a bit more work involved when building wheels with Berd Spokes. In certain applications, it's well worth it, though.
Regarding hub choices...
One thing to note – if not known already – is that Unno frames are nowadays made in Asia. This is not to say that the manufacturing quality has gotten lower compared to the operations they had in Barcelona. Most people still assume that the frames are still made in their own facility, which...
Thanks for elaborating, good points.
The current axle assemblies found in Vesper and Onyx hubs seem to do their job more than adequately and I don't see them lacking in any department. DT Swiss hubs are certainly nice and are a setup-and-forget-it type of deal. However, I don't see it as a...
Plenty of hub models employ bearing preload adjustment – like Chris King – which can be considered only a beneficial feature when executed well and used properly.
Onyx Classic hubs paired with the rims of choice: FR 541, EX511, Revel RW30 or Lilienthal XT. With the DT Swiss HX531, one has the option to go for a 36H build for some added strength.
The Return of 36H Wheels – A Choice for EMTB and Other Heavy-duty Applications - Onyx Hubs Europe
Curious to hear what the reasoning was for why the Hydra hub would outlast Onyx Classic hub in any scenario?
The Onyx Classic hub is rated for ebikes with mid-motors up to 1500W of power output. With most of the current offerings, there are plenty of reserves left.
Besides the silence, low...
I stand corrected then. Based on that description, the sales person in question did not perform his duties in the best possible manner.
Once again, hopefully, a solution is found.
When purchasing a top-of-the-line shock, it's worth checking the manual at least once. The preload setting procedure is described in quite good detail there. Lifting the rear end of the bike compresses the internal negative spring after which the preload is set, two full turns maximum after the...
