This isn't a cheap alternative, but if you have garage room, one of the Dutch cargo e bikes with a big hopper is a great way to take dogs.

At some point it is easier and cheaper to rent a emtb at your destination, maybe try something new. After traveling with skis for years I finally saw the light and just rented at destination. Not helpful advice to you, but an alternative.

Maybe velcro would work as your kludge, easier than tape to open close. My charger came with a velcro cord tidy that is about the right size, don't know if yours did

Hi! and have fun. True: the battery is the heart and source of the fun times, but like anything else it's not forever! I picked up a used specialized and I'm happy to find the battery is delivering. Rode about an hour in 30 deg weather, pretty high motor demand and used about a third. Be well!
