It is worth checking the battery connection fitting at base of battery compartment - very small wires attach this to main power cable so could be wet or corroded. You may need to drop the motor out to access fully so not a job for the faint hearted but very easy to do if you follow...
Why is there no publicly available data on motor reliability by brand and model ?
This may seem a bit of a rant but it is based on true experience
Manufacturers seem to build a wall of silence and I have found no data to support any buyer of an EMTB in selecting the best motor (reliability)...

May be damp inside the control unit if is a Shimano E8000 display which switches off the motor by default - check if display seems steamed up - if so can be dried out by removing from handlebars and putting somewhere warm like over a radiator for at least 24 hours - got mine working again...
