Bosch Kiox display question

I've got a Bosch Kiox display/controller on order for my Orbea Wild FS. Not sure if this is a stupid question or not and I cannot find any reference to the issue. If you disconnect the display unit does the controller still control the motor?

No.
The only thing you can do with it disconnected, is browse through the previous rides stats using the light button, and i assume also connect via bluetooth to sync previous rides with the bosch ebike connect app.

No power to the motor also. i have knocked the kiox loose with my knee on some technical descents. I get to the bottom and notice there is no assist. Luckily it was still there and not 1K vertical back up where I hit it with my knee, that would have been a tragedy. i have since added a lanyard to it and it has come in handy twice since i added it.

I would mount it using the set screw. I used a lanyard to keep mine attached in case it came loose which worked fine, until I had an off last week and it went flying into a rock. While the lanyard kept it easy to find, the Kiox itself is smashed and the display is cracked and won't power up. That means no Kiox, which means no motor, which means no riding until a replacement gets here. Costly and now waiting for the package (and they used the worst courier they could have picked in Canpar).

If you take the Kiox mount off of the frame there is a hole in the back side and matching threaded (M4?) hole in the back of the Kiox. This allow you to bolt the Kiox to the holder. My Rail spends a lot of time on the bike rack on the car in sketchy places so I am concerned about having the shinny trinket there for someone to try and pry it off, so always remove my Kiox when it is on the car.

I'm not sure what you mean having not seen it yet. Do you mean the screw that fastens it to the stem?

Can't help but wonder if it smashed specifically because you had it attached with a lanyard?

There's a set screw that mounts the display unit itself to the mount. It goes underneath the mount and fixes the display unit in place. It's a 6mm M3 screw.

Does the display not just attach by magnet to the mount? The videos I've seen they seem to just dock and undock, there is no screwing involved.

It does both. A magnet mount is fine for the Kiox on an cruiser/commuter/urban/road e-bike. It is not strong enough to keep the Kiox attached to an e-MTB, especially since falls are part of the sport. I opted to use a lanyard solution to keep it from being lost and the price I paid was $300 to replace it (plus a week now without a rideable bike). If I hadn't used a lanyard might it have survived the fall? Maybe, but would have been able to find it? Maybe ... maybe not.

That's why the replacement will be attached with the set screw which is part of the Kiox design.

This what prompted my post. It seems logical to me to still be able control the motor without the display in those gnarly downhill situations, where lets face it, the display is a little superfluous. Sensible and possible may of course be mutually exclusive. It would be interesting to know if this would be possible.

I had a bad off braking the kiox plastic where a lanyard would go and also the controller and recently managed to buy a replacement set for £120, upshot is now I carry my kiox as a spare and would hold it on with a band.

Ive paid the fee for the security upgrade which turns the kiox into a key and bricks the bike without, not sure If there’s a tracking function also but atm I ride with the screw but although I don’t take the display off at night and losing these screw would be trouble so I think what you could do is use a couple rubber bands to hold the display in place on days out and then just unclip, no need for the lanyard then.

I must have ridden mine this way for a few months with a band, never came off.

Kiox has both magnet and spot for a screw to secure it in. Although my bike didnt come with the extra screw. The screw hole is in the center of the magnet (have a look!)

I use this mount from KTM, i figure it protects the kiox more then the stem mount.

I may be wrong but I would have thought that in the event of a crash it would be better for the unit to be able to come free. It should be tough enough the only risk I see is that it may be lost in the undergrowth.

I use a lanyard with a quick release clip. Take it off when on the bike rack and if I have to leave it (not often).. Pre-lanyard I did loose it for over an hour in mud and leaves.

Yes. Ive had a lanyard and a quick release attached for a while now. Pre-lanyard my Kiox was knocked off twice(15min to find once). Never lost or misplaced since the lanyard and quick release was attached but now, when it disconnects, its easily found and replaced in seconds. I prefer the stem mounted version because the view is easier for me(vision issues). In the case of a crash it simply pops-off and hangs there.

how long is the lanyard?
i would be worried that having it attached would cause it to continually catch and bang on handlebars, frame etc.

It’s 21cm. Mine doesn’t seem to catch or bang.
The lanyard could be as long or short as you want…… but not too long or it will catch in the spokes.

The lanyard is attached/looped thru a single stem bolt, then a release device/clip, then atttached to the Kiox. The lanyard or string doesn’t have to be to long(2 1/2 inches ?) I posted some pics somewhere in here..can’t find them though.

I have Wild Fs . Rode over 1000 k off road at various locations. Enduro style. Had a few off and display never popped off mount. No need to secure with extra anything. It’s great / easy to just pop off mount when u stop and are more than 3 steps away from bike and whilst setting up bike out of car pre ride. Last thing I put on at bike won’t work without it.

Probably bolt it on with the thread in the unit….but then you loose the advantage of taking it off / off in 2 seconds.

I practically have the same setup except I use a loop thru one of the stem bolts instead of the bar attachment. (Clever btw). I use the exact same clip/snap also. ??. I can only release in 2.15seconds though ?.

I think you may have recommended it on here...2.15s isn't too bad. Just a couple of hours practice a day should get you up to speed!

Time will tell if it was a good idea, but I used a plastic screw to secure the Kiox displays to the Kiox mount (my bike didn’t come with the Kiox factory screw), just in case something needs to break. I bought a packet of 10 for a dollar something…

Just an update to say that so far, so good. I’ve had no issues with the plastic screw holding the Kiox display in place.

So last week I ordered the Kiox mount for the upper tube (knock block screw area). I guess I’m trying to cleanup the cockpit since I’m on the AXS-Derailer-Reverb-Train. I use the 45mm Blendr stem which allows a single or double Blendr holder to be attached for a Bontrager light or GoPro.

This will free up the stem tube for other things such as AirTag, tools or emergency Viagra supply. (The wife suggested only the AirTag btw).🤔

I find that during a ride, besides switching modes, I mostly use the Kiox for the digital clock. I look at the other stats once I get home. As long as I can glance at the Kiox, and see the purple colour, I know I’m in EMTB mode. Moving the Kiox to the knock-block location might allow for a better angle of the Bontrager light and cleanup the cockpit a bit.

I don’t know how many grams a Viagra supplement weights? 😉
