Every now and then, I buy a new helmet. So I’ve tested quite a few. Thanks to my head shape, it can be difficult finding a helmet that fits comfortably. Lately, I’ve been happy using Leatt and Sweet Protection helmets. Since both Sweet and I are Norwegians, I started buying Sweet clothes and protection. This time, I’ve received a Sweet Primer Mips for free.

Sweet tells us this is due to the way Virginia Tech is testing the helmets. The Bushwhacker 2Vi has harder and denser EPS absorption material to withstand harder impacts. A higher force than what Virginia Tech use for their test protocol. This ultimately means the helmet is less efficient at absorbing smaller impacts. And that sounds sensible, it’s the bigger impacts that does the most severe damage.
The Bushwacker 2Vi is about 50 g heavier than the Primer and it covers more of the head. The 2Vi is a bigger and bulkier helmet. I prefer the fit and looks of the Primer, so I’ll be using that one. It’s nice to have a super comfortable helmet, and it might just be more effective when falling at lower speeds. That might be an advantage for someone rarely doing enduro speeds.

Sweet scores well in independent tests
The Primer sits between the Sweet Trailblazer Mips and the Bushwhacker 2Vi Mips. Virginia Tech is known for their thorough helmet tests, and they rank the Trailblazer Mips in 6th position of about 250 helmets. It’s the third best mountainbiking helmet. The Bushwhacker 2Vi is designed for higher speeds and harder impacts and it’s certified for enduro and ebike use. How does the Sweet Primer Mips compare?
I’ve previously used the old Bushwhacker 2 Mips. This is a very comfortable helmet, but it’s a tad lighter and covers less of the head. Sweet Protection is convinced the Primer Mips is considerably better and safer. The Primer weighs 390 g, that’s 15 g more than the old Bushwhacker Mips. And the Primer is 65 g heavier than the Trailblazer Mips that scored so well with Virginia Tech.
