Any experienced spray painters?

My daughter is growing fast, and has now moved up from her 20” wheeled Specialized RipRock, to a 27.5” Rockhopper. She looks ridiculous on it, but I’m sure she’ll grow into it soon.

Her immaculate pink Riprock is now going through ‘gender reassignment’ treatment (hope this doesn’t offend anyone 🤷🏼‍♂️) and is going to turn blue so my boy can get the use of it.

I stripped it down completely (I got a BB removal tool after this photo) and have spent 20mins a night after work with it in the sandblaster.
It is now free of any pink paint / white undercoat, and is back to bare metal.
I have then spent an hour or so washing it with degreaser to get all the contaminants out. All parts are plugged up / taped off ready for spraying.

I’ve never really sprayed anything important before… but figure if I make a backside of this, I can strip it down again and put it to one of the powdercoaters we use at work.

I bought some rattle cans from Specialist Paints… so have a primer (white), a base coat (white), followed by a blue Spectracoat (basically a blue flip paint) and then a 2k clear coat.

I’ve built myself a wee spray booth at work out of an old crate and some cardboard, and have hung the forks up ready for spraying. I’ll test my ability on the forks, as there’s less to strip back if it all goes wrong!

According to the tins I need 1-2 coats of primer, 2-3 of the base coat, 2-3 of the Spectracoat, and 2-3 of the clear coat.

I’ve watched various videos and read guides, which tell me I need to wet / dry sand with a 600+ grit paper… but
my question is how often? Should this be between every coat?
The paint indicates I can apply the second / third coat after 15 mins each… but if I’m sanding it between every coat, this may take some time!!

Appreciate any tips / pointers that can make this a success!! 👍

General rule of thumb, flat primer, don't flat colour, buff clear coat with compound for a shiny finish. Other rule of thumb, get a gun & do it better 😃

Make sure you use an etch primer on aluminium.

This is the primer…

I want to make a decent job, but it’s for a bike for a nearly 5 year old… so I doubt he’ll notice!
I thought the cans would be a cheap way to try it out… but when they’re all in the basket, with VAT and carriage on top, I was over £70 for 400ml of each.
The Spectracoat blue was £25 +VAT for a tin!

They claim these cans give as good a finish as a gun. I’m sure it’s a load of bull… but I’ve watched a couple of videos of people getting good results with them.

Yeah, it will look better if you wet sand between every coat. Maybe start with 1000?

Cans will always come out grainy by comparison to a gun & compressor but can still work out good. It's definitely an art, the biggest sin is laying on too heavily. Multiple coats like dusting works well. rather than trying to do it on one or two passes, patience is a virtue & all that but in the final analysis, it's a kids bike & will get bashed about, so don't kill yourself over it. Unless that "booth" has extraction you're going to get horrendous over spray.

You maybe better off in a clean, well ventilated area, where you cam move around the parts.

I can add an extractor to the top… got a couple of them kicking about at work.
I was going to do 1 part at a time, and hang them elsewhere to dry whilst spraying the next one.

It would have been useful to ask for advice before sanding it back to bare alloy. Now you just made it harder for yourself.
I would have a suggested clean it up, skuff it back, but not to bare metal so you retained the the undercoat. then paint overtop of that.

Spray can finish is only every going to be so good. Its a kids bike. Don't over think it. Spray an etch prime on then what ever colour you want. You shouldn't need to sand it when finished. Just put the parts back on and ride. The boy will scratch the shit out of it anyway.

PS In the future buy generic coloured bikes that both sexes can use. Red, orange....
